The photographs are all detailed enough of the British line and its firing positions to be part of a court martialable offence, but no one is going to take Money to task. For one, he is the most valuable officer on the team, overseeing the machine-guns that have killed more of the enemy than any rifles. He is also well-liked, self-deprecating, and sharp on his feet. He often hands his camera to others – to Fred, to Wright, to Graham – and poses in his own pictures, defying the threat of the enemy’s sharpshooters. One taken in his own machine-gun position at Ritchie’s farm shows him leaning casually on a blanketed parapet, binoculars dangling from his hands, looking exotically bristled [110], a picture of insouciance. Behind you can see the stocks of rifles ready loaded to repel any surprise attack, to his left the handles of his machine-gun. Years later he captions the photo ‘Self and No 1 Machine Gun (Mem. Another must not be photographed again!)’
